I haven’t done copper origami in a while, but I decided to make another praying mantis using my favorite patina. I experimented with sanding down the edges and lines to add accents of contrast.

I’m hoping this piece eventually finds its way to the best MC as a token of gratitude for his performance.

I was inspired to revisit copper origami after the show I had over the weekend, where I sold out of my smaller copper origami cranes. I enjoy blending coppersmithing with origami, giving the art a sense of permanence and weight. It retains its delicate appearance, but when you feel it, the heaviness changes your perception.

There’s something missing that’s kept me from doing copper origami more often. I wish I had the funds to buy large, thicker sheets to make 2 to 4 foot tall pieces, but that’s quite an investment. However, I don’t think size is the only thing I’m missing. I need to practice my patinas, find more recipes I like, and refine my preferred application methods.

I’m considering creating some butterflies, possibly cutting small holes in the wings and replacing them with glass, or maybe adding glass eyes to the praying mantis.
