Artist Bio

Robert J. Gulick is a third-generation artist whose creative spirit runs as deep as the roots of his family tree. His journey into the arts began not with formal instruction, but with curiosity, wonder, and countless hours spent wandering art supply stores as a child. Drawing and painting never quite captured his interest—until he stumbled upon a quiet corner filled with origami books and brightly colored folding papers. The vibrant hues and geometric magic of the folds captivated him. He quickly picked up the basics and has been folding ever since. To this day, it’s rare to find him without a piece of origami paper nearby.

Around the same time, Robert developed a love for photography, sparked by the simple joy of looking closely at the world around him. That fascination with light, composition, and unnoticed detail blossomed into a lifelong pursuit of capturing beauty through the lens—another tool in his creative toolkit.

Entirely self-taught and proudly independent, Robert charts his own artistic course. His approach is intuitive, exploratory, and joyfully hands-on. With a natural gift for observation and a tendency to follow inspiration wherever it leads, he has become a true mixed media artisan, blending traditional craftsmanship with playful experimentation.

Robert’s work spans an impressive range of materials: the luminous color play of stained glass, the delicate strength of folded paper, the earthy resilience of forged copper, the raw elegance of iron through blacksmithing. Each medium offers its own voice, and Robert delights in listening closely—allowing material, memory, and moment to speak through his hands.

His studios are less a workshop and more a cabinet of curiosities, filled with tools, textures, and treasures in progress. It’s where precision meets whimsy, and where everyday objects are transformed into artworks that celebrate imperfection, resilience, and a touch of magic.

Whether crafting a sunlit suncatcher, a contemplative sculpture, or an intricate piece of origami in metal, Robert invites viewers to slow down and see the world with fresh eyes—curious, open, and full of wonder.
